Competing with the best!
by Tony Butler
When you believe you are number one in the country you need to put the theory to the test and that is what happened in the Wolverhampton youth race for under 12's where Jed Smithson from Hillingdon travelled to see how he would faire against the best from the Midlands. Best from the Midlands means Spencer Corder, Alex Burden and Lewis Tinsley from Stratford and Thomas White from Wolverhampton. It also meant that Welsh champion Emyr Truelove would want to be there.
Let battle commence! The circuit chosen by Wolverhampton was again at Stourport on Severn which is a very undulating course and a great test if you get left behind. So it was no surprise when the race became a three horse race between Smithson; Corder and Truelove. In the end it was Smithson recording his 10thwin of the season followed by Truelove who has 3 wins and 3 seconds to his credit ( but a lot of track racing victories as well) with 3rd place going to Corder who has 2 wins and 4 second places to his credit so far this year.
There is no doubt that if you want to get to the top you need to compete with the best which is what Corder is doing – what he obviously realises is his need to win in a tight sprint for the line. Some track work needed here perhaps?
The rest of the Stratford team acquitted themselves very well with Alex Burden 7th Lewis Tinsley 11th. Joshua Darlow 13th; Mathew Jordan 14th; Ben Machin 20thJoe Gregg 28th and Luke Brennan 29th.
In the under 14 race Baden green was 15th and Tom Charles 17th with David Hird 23rd in the under 16 event.
