We are awesome at cyclo-cross

Stratford are officially awesome at cyclocross achieving 3rd place in team participation; 3rd placed team U6-U12 and 5th placed in team U14-Seniors/Vets in the WMCCL for 2023.

A fitting finale to a successful CX season where Aldersley Stadium was the location for the 2023 West Midlands Regional championship and a great number of Stratford Cycling club members stepped up onto the podium. The Juniors especially finishing off a fantastic season on a high.

The Wolverhampton course was exceptionally muddy and even a dusting of snow (see photo) failed to dampen the spirits, resulting some exciting spills and tight racing. This really was the pinnacle of a packed 12 round season.

Energetic youngster Imogen Shephard (the first of 4 medals for the Shephard family) was first to medal with a fantastic 3rd place in the Under 6s and next was Tara Richmond-Russell, also achieving 3rd place in the Under 8s.

Lucas Shephard gained silver in the Under 10s, just pipping teammates Nathan Edmunds in 4th place and Blake Richmond-Russell in 8th.

The Under 12s category saw some sibling rivalry with Ruben and Oscar Delbeke battling to 5th and 11th position respectively, just ahead of Oliver Owen in 12th and Harrison Jeffery in 23rd.

Scarlett Ford took to the podium in the Youth A Female Category with 2nd place and crowning a magnificent season as league champion. Ruben Stringfellow crossed the line in 6th in the Youth A Male. Jefferson Tear-Verweij won U16s , Junior club member who rides for Team Enable.

Another sibling rivalry was on show in the Youth B category as Emilia Marks, 10th, triumphed over her brother Lewis Marks, 23rd.

On the top step of the Juniors podium stood Stratford Cycling Club member and Rotor Race Team rider Spencer Corder after a dominating display over the full distance course. David Poole was 22nd in the Juniors.

Richard Shephard put in a dominating performance to secure a 2nd place in the V40-44 section and the Vets 50+ were also strongly represented by Alan Ford, 28th and Philip Bromwich, 36th.

The women were not to be outshone however, with Club member and Rotor Race team rider Alison Bagnal claiming the top prize for the V55-59 by nearly 2 ½ minutes and Ceri Shephard taking 5th in the Seniors.

Whilst, over in the Central Region cyclocross champs, Jorgie Gillett was triumphant in the female Under 12s, Aidan Sherriff and Alfie Punter, 6th and 12th , in the Under 14s and Benedict Sherriff 8th in the Under 10s, showing that Stratford Cycling Club is dominating far and wide.

The strength of the youngsters this season has been impressive and many are looking forward to the next season whilst David Poole continues his campaign at the Junior National Cyclocross Championships in January.

We are all looking forward to the official WMCCL awards ceremony in Feb 2024 to see out League winners and 2nd/3rd placed riders pick up their silverware and medals.
