Gravel Rides
Gravel riding has seen a huge rise in popularity amongst cyclists in recent years and this is reflected in the increase of organised rides by Stratford CC. Many gravel riders come from a road background and may therefore be unfamiliar with the rules and requirements for off road cycling in the UK which are reliant on public rights of way, primarily bridleways and unclassified roads.
Rules of the Off Road
Cyclists share rights of way with other users such walkers, horse riders and canal users so it is incumbent on all of us to be considerate and respectful when we ride. Please be sure to stick to the rules
- Cycling on a public footpath is not acceptable.
- Leave no trace.Take all your litter home.
- Never discard anything unless you are able to put it in a designated bin.
- Be polite and considerate to other users you meet on tracks and bridleways.
- When approaching other users always slow down, alert them in good time and pass safely. If neccessary stop, and let them pass by.
- A bell is highly recommended.
- Shut gates. If you open a gate, you or a member of your group must close the gate regardless of who is behind you.
- Follow temporary signage; it''s there fore a reason.
- Give animals space and ride past them slowly.
- Horses may be come spooked by a large group of colourfully dressd cyclists. If neccessary stop and give space for them to pass by.
- Livestock can be dangerous if spooked; be particularly careful around cows with calfs or horses with foals.
- Ride through puddles not around them to minimise erosion.
- Riding fast is fine only when you have a long, clear view ahead and it’s safe to do so.
- Be self-sufficient. It is your responsibility to wear appropriate clothing and carry enough spares, food and water for the duration of the ride.
- Make sure you have the route, your phone and basic mechanical skills. Don’t rely on others to bail you out.
